Who was John Robert Powers?

John Robert Powers was an actor in New York City in the early 1900s. One day he overheard an associate say he needed a group of attractive people to pose for magazine advertisements. That’s when Mr. Powers’ exceptional entrepreneurial skills took over: he rounded up acting friends and trained them for the advertisements. From that informal beginning Powers went on to found the nation’s first modeling agency in 1923. He was an integral part in the birth of the modern modeling industry.

Are you a school?

Yes we are a school for those who need/want it. We are also a marketing firm. We provide two auditions per month to our clients right in our Long Island studio. We are extremely proud of our record. For over 80 years, we’ve helped our students earn and maintain a competitive edge over their rivals in the entertainment industry. Famous Hollywood stars still work with acting coaches daily because the best-prepared candidates are the most successful.

Does training make a difference?

All the difference in the world. The entertainment industry is fast-paced and constantly changing, and agents and directors are always looking for new faces and talent. These busy professionals vastly prefer a well-prepared candidate to one who lacks polish, experience and/or training.

Q

Do you only work with models?

No. High fashion modeling has very strict physical requirements; 5’9” and above for women, 5’11” and above for men, and many otherwise talented individuals cannot qualify. For those who are interested in modeling but don’t meet the height requirements they might want to consider print work modeling. There are no height requirements for print work. Please keep in mind that each individual is going to have their own strengths and weaknesses. Our highly trained staff will help to set up a program specifically designed to work with each persons strengths. We will evaluate each person on a case by case basis and make an assessment on what career path would be best for each individual client.

Will this interfere with school?

No. We believe that a solid academic foundation should be a young person’s first priority. JRP’s policy is to work only with those who strive for academic excellence. We are very strict about our clients maintaining a good GPA (grade point average). All of JRP Long Island’s auditions take place on Sunday’s specifically not to interfere with a child’s education.

Q

What time commitment is expected if JRP agrees to work with me?

Clients will meet and audition with agents twice a month on Sundays. Coaching (if needed) takes place once a week for two hours either in the evening during the week or on Saturday. Each coaching session runs in 10 week increments.

Does JRP accept everyone?

No. We are looking for people with a high level of interest, dependability, and POTENTIAL. When our students meet top industry professionals their conduct is a direct reflection of our staff and training. Our relationships with the best agencies, managers, casting directors etc. are excellent because we are known for presenting only the most talented, enthusiastic, prepared, and professional candidates.

I have heard that if you want to be a model, agencies will pay everything for you to start. Is this true?

In any career, training and marketing are an up-front investment of time and money. The most successful models, actors, and singers will tell you that the learning process never ends. In today’s fast-paced environment, very few agencies in the world will front costs necessary to begin someone’s career - there are “discoveries”, but like lottery winners, they are rare. All professionals have to work for their success. Just like a college education. Just because you want to become a lawyer doesn’t mean a law firm will pay for your education. You are expected to do it on your own with the hopes of one day getting a job.

At John Robert Powers Long Island, we give you the training, guidance and confidence to help you attain your goals in the entertainment industry.
